Year in and year out, the Matterhorn attracts nature lovers from far and wide. In late summer, music lovers can also indulge themselves in this magical mountain world with the top-class series of concerts provided by the Zermatt Festival.
Special guest this 8th Festival is the Swiss Daniel Schnyder, a brilliant bridgebuilder between classical music and jazz. As Composer in Residence and saxophonist, he will create enticing
accents with his own works; which include a world premiere! The wide-ranging programme also includes symphonies, serenades and arias by Bach, Mozart, Dvořák, Mahler and other great masters.
On the concert stage, the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin, as always the core of the Zermatt Festival Orchestra, plays host to several major soloists: mezzo-soprano Stella Doufexis, violinist Wolfram Brandl, baritone Stephan Genz, oboist Jonathan Kelly, percussionist Bachar Khalifé and trombonist Stefan Schulz.
The festivities will begin on 31 August with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, performing Sergei Rachmaninoff's «Vespers». Violin and piano are also well represented on the first weekend with Nurit Stark and Cédric Pescia. The Swiss pianist of Chinese origin Mélodie Zhao rounds off the diverse range of concerts with a solo recital devoted to Beethoven and Liszt.
