Discovery

In addition to concerts, the Zermatt Festival organizes a series of activities for our young and inquisitive festival visitors, lead by artists from a variety of disciplines.

For the second time, the Zermatt Festival has invited not only musicians, but also musicologists and historians as their guests, to give a series of pre-concert talks – presenting the opportunity for a mutual exchange of ideas. The talks are intended not only for serious classical music fans but also for anyone who wants to find out more about the works that are to be performed.

Pre-concert talks

Whether out of curiosity or a passion for classical music: explore the fascinating
backgrounds of the works to be performed. We have also invited musicologists to the Zermatt Festival this year to give pre-concert talks. These events are not only informative and entertaining, they also provide an opportunity for the mutual exchange of ideas in an exquisite setting.

Workshop – You're an artist, too!

In the twinkling of an eye, an animated film brings everything to life: the strangest, funniest and most imaginative ideas can be expressed in moving pictures. Just how such a film is created, is explained in this workshop from A to Z.
After an introduction to stop-motion techniques, each participant's imagination can run wild in the design of a 2-minute animated film. Instruments, scores, music stands and other objects used in the staging of a musical piece serve as props. The best video clips of the fledgling filmmakers will be broadcast on local television stations and uploaded to the Zermatt Festival website.
Samuel Dématraz and Paul Walther from the Valais Academy of Arts will show how to write the script, how to shoot, edit, and make the soundtrack. They have carried out many video and photography projects together with internationally renowned artists. Their works have been shown in several exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad.

Carte Blanche – hark! presents «REQUIEMreloaded»

The singers will be spread out on the church square in Zermatt, and they will sing and improvise on some passages from Mozart's «Requiem». The Basel audio designer Tomek Kolczynski will pick up their voices and interweave them with pre-recorded electronic music and ambient sounds taken on the spot. After the musical intervention the sounds will last only for a while longer as if there was an echo chamber on the square before they disappear in the sounds of the everyday.
